A visit to the Karma Sutra Temples (Khajuraho)

Last weekend, Tania, myself and a group of friends flew down to Khajuraho, to see what the world knows as the Karma Sutra Temples. It was a tour organised by Navina Jafa.

We ended on the most circuitous route getting down there: Delhi – Varanassi – Agra – Khajuraho. We were late leaving New Delhi which means we got down to Khajuraho quite late.

We didn’t get a chance to see the Western Temples until early on Sunday which means we didn’t get to see the temples of Orchha – next time.

Khajuraho is located in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The temples are a collection of Hindu and Jain and were built between 950AD and 1050AD.

There used to be about 85 temples but by the time they were re-discovered again the 1800s, there were only 22.

The sexual depictions the temples are famous for actually only make up about 10% of the total figures – the rest depicts the everyday life of Indians at the time the temples were built.
